Can you visit the caves when it is raining?

Conditions in the caves are the same whatever the weather outside, so a passing shower does not rule out a trip to the Kościeliska Valley. In a thunderstorm, strong wind or heavy rain it is better to stay low, as the climbs to the caves are steep and slippery after rain. There is nowhere to shelter in the national park.

Can the hot tub be used in the rain?

Yes. The tub stands in the open and is heated by fire, so rain does not bother it. Many guests think it makes an even greater impression in cold, wet weather than in summer. Ask in the morning so the water has time to heat.

What is there to do in Zakopane when it rains?

Zakopane offers museums, indoor attractions for children and Krupówki, and the drive takes a little over a quarter of an hour. Do allow for crowds, though, because on wet days in season everyone has the same idea, and for paid parking. We treat it as the option for a day when it rains from morning to night.

Is it worth walking in the mountains at all with a poor forecast?

The floors of the Chochołowska and Lejowa valleys are easy routes, largely sheltered by forest, so in a passing shower they are quite bearable. We would advise against the ridges and higher ground, where the weather changes abruptly. In thunderstorms it is decidedly better to stay lower.

Is there somewhere to spend a wet afternoon at Kojsówka?

Guests have the dining room, the covered part of the terrace and the garden hot tub. Once it clears, many light a fire, as the wood dries faster than you would think. A walk down to the river after rain is impressive too, though then you have to watch the children especially closely near the bank.

The weather below the Tatras can change a plan in a quarter of an hour. The sun shines in the morning and by eleven a wall of rain hangs over the Chochołowska Valley. With adults you can wait it out over coffee. With children, not necessarily.

Below is the plan we suggest to guests at breakfast when the forecast looks bad. From the nearest things to those that need a longer drive.

Witolandia: the play centre in Witów

The nearest option and the first one we mention. The Witolandia play centre is on the ground floor of the Witowianka restaurant building at Witów 205D — a few minutes from us, with no trip to Zakopane and no hunt for parking.

Inside there are slides, a large ball pool and winding structures to squeeze through, plus themed stations for little cooks and mechanics and two multimedia games. The range is varied enough to last a few hours rather than a quarter of an hour.

The thermal baths: hot water while it pours

The classic, and our guests' most common choice. The Chochołowskie Thermal Baths are a few minutes by car from Witów, so a rainy day can be moved there with almost no travelling.

One practical note: everyone else will have the same idea. On wet days in season the queues can be long, so buy tickets online and go either early in the morning or after five in the afternoon, when the first wave of visitors heads home.

Caves: the weather underground is always the same

Changeable weather does not rule out the Kościeliska Valley. Five caves are open there — Mroźna, Smocza Jama, Mylna, Raptawicka and Obłazkowa — and conditions inside are identical whatever is happening outside.

You only have to tell two situations apart. A passing shower is manageable in a jacket. A thunderstorm, strong wind or heavy rain is the signal to stay low, because the climbs to the caves are steep and slippery after rain, and there is nowhere to shelter in the national park.

Zakopane: when it really rains all day

A little over a quarter of an hour by car and you have museums, Krupówki under cover, and a whole range of paid attractions for children. This is the option for a day when it rains from morning to night and nothing else is possible.

Bear in mind that on wet days in season Zakopane becomes unpleasantly crowded and parking costs money. That is why we keep it as the last option, not the first.

A wet afternoon at Kojsówka

The wood-fired hot tub: rain does not bother it, and in the cold it makes an even greater impression. Ask in the morning so the water has time to heat.
The dining room and the covered part of the terrace: somewhere for a board game, a coffee and sitting out the worst hour.
A fire once it clears: the wood dries faster than you would think, and an evening after rain is often the loveliest.
A walk down to the river: after rain the stream carries far more water and is quite something — but then keep children away from the bank.

A ready-made plan for a rainy day

An unhurried morning: breakfast here, then Witolandia for two or three hours and lunch in the same building. The thermal baths in the afternoon — best to set off straight after lunch to beat the afternoon peak. Back in the evening, the hot tub heated for a set time, and an early night.

A day like that is often remembered better than many a walk in the mountains. By the children especially.
